THINGS I HAVE LEARNED ABOUT WHITETAIL DEER

I am now 70 years young and have spent most of my life hunting and learning about the elusive whitetail deer.  For the last 12 years, I have observed whitetail deer up close and personal.  We now have a high fenced hunting preserve with over 100 whitetail deer.  Here are some things I noticed along the way:

• Whitetail deer are very observant.  They notice immediately any and everything new added to their territory.  They are very cautious of something out of the ordinary until they figure out if it is safe or not. They also notice if I am carrying anything unusual when approaching them; showing alarm if they don't recognize it, or fear if they know from experience it produces pain (such as a dart gun).
• Whitetail deer all have a different personality.  Most importantly, this means some accept a humans presence more readily than others.  This may be why some deer seem like pushovers while others seem like ghosts.  They seem to have varying degrees of fear of us humans.  This personality, for lack of a better description, seems to be a life long thing.  Meaning they never outgrow it.  Some deer. no matter how many times they see I mean them no harm, still show the same fear of me.  Other whitetail deer that are accustom to my presence, show no fear or little fear of me.  They all show varying degrees of concern, based on their personality's
• Whitetail deer never seem to lose their built in flight mechanism to anything that startles them.  It doesn't take much to trigger this either.  They have differing states of alertness brought on by the threat level they perceive at any given time.  One thing to note here; they are always in some state of alertness!  The higher this state of alertness is, the less it takes to trigger their flight reaction.  For instance, if someone they don't know is with me when I am around them, their state of alertness is very high and the least sudden movement will set them instantly into flight mode.  A good example of this is a deer's ability to react to being shot at with a bow in less time than it takes for the arrow to reach them. 
• Whitetail deer seem to know when a person is just walking around, working in their area or pursuing them and react accordingly.  In other words they seem to know whether your presence is a direct threat to them or not.
• They say elephants have good memory.  Well, a whitetail deer does too.  A deer that I have had to medicate with a dart gun will not fear me because of that instance of pain, if I come around them later, no longer carrying a gun.  But if they see me later carrying a dart gun they will remember what the gun can do and flee me.
• Whitetail deer alert on noise and movement at great distances (easily a mile away) and will watch whatever is there very intently until it is out of sight.  They become accustom to vehicles passing by and as long as the vehicle keeps moving they usually stay put.
